Caretta Caretta & Chelonia Mydas

Nearly one million years, the water of our island has been visited by Chelonia Mydas and Caretta Caretta. Chelonia Mydas has spawned the edge of South east of Turkey and sometimes spawned in Israel.

This fascinating creatures have came to the beach of Cyprus for spawning on May and August. Alagadi, a place that they spawn , has been protected.

After setting of the sun, the adult female turtles whose shell can be over 100 cm have been look for a spawning place on the beach.According to the their family they have left 65 – 110 eggs.Each turtle has spawned five or six times between 10 or 15 days. Female turtle has turned back to the sea after spawning.For spawning again, it comes to the same beach two years later.

Ecologists and the students have observed the area for helping to protect the water turtles.For visitors, it is an exating event to observe that natural event. If you want to see the caretta, you can take part in the night camping group on beach that are composed of the people coming everywhere of the world to protect the caretta caretta every year.
